Hails and Ales Club

My favourite releases of the week (01/08/2025)

Another week has passed and we have once again been bestowed with many new releases to get our teeth in to and it is here that I will declare what ones have been by favourite from the latest batch.

From this week’s offerings I have picked one LP and one EP to shine a spotlight on and, on brand, they are both death metal related.

My favourite full length album that was released this week was ā€˜Mossbane Lantern’ by Sallow Moth. Essentially a one person band, albeit with a cool litany of guests on this release, the project is rooted in death metal. However there is a lot more to it than this. It is very much on the progressive side of things. I’ve become quite a fan of prog death lately and this one hit the sweet spot for me. I’d definitely recommend it if that’s your sort of thing also. Art is cool too.

The second release that I enjoyed this week was a demo from Scotland’s Caustic Phlegm. Having already blessed us with a great album earlier this year, we have now also been gifted a 5 track demo, helpfully titled ā€œDemo 2025ā€. Bit of confusion on this one as Bandcamp says it was released in July but I didn’t see it listed until this week which is also when it was listed as released on Metal Archives.

Nothing too insightful to say about this one, you can probably get what it sounds like from the band name. Solid slab of death metal. As they say on their Bandcamp page: ā€œOne must not retrieve the phlegm from the throat, but from the soulā€.

Bonus

Just a little honourable mention for something a bit different this week. I’d like to also shout out ā€œGirls Aren’t Afraid of Bloodā€ by Qwam. I’d not heard of them before this week but the New York five piece have produced a lovely fuzzy slice of alt rock. Well worth checking out.
