Albums of the Year 1979 - as chosen by users of the Fediverse
It’s time once again for another edition of Fediverse Album of the Year and this time, we are going even further back, all the way to 1979.
This year had less individual albums mentioned than the previous years yet had the clearest winner we’ve had so far, by some distance.
This time out we have one out and out winner and five albums tied for second place. However, there is no bronze medal as there were no third place ties, after the runners up every other album received once vote.
So without further ado and to the surprise of nobody, the winner by some distance for 1979 Album of the Year is The Wall by Pink Floyd. Gasp. An absolute classic album which is well worth its place on the list even if it didn’t get my personal vote. Maybe this accolade is what can finally bring them back together.
After this, as mentioned above, there were five records that were tied for second place and they are as follows
London Calling by The Clash
Overkill by Motörhead
Highway to Hell by AC/DC
Fear of Music by Talking Heads
Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division
Another great set of albums here. My personal choice was Overkill by Motörhead but they also released Bomber that year meaning that my favourite and third favourite albums by one of my favourite bands were released in the same year. Madness!
Highway to Hell is an absolute classic which needs nothing further added from me. Was cool to The Clash there, the first band shirt I ever owned was a Clash shirt.
I like Talking Heads in theory and like what I have heard but haven’t listened to a full album as far as I can remember so I will try and change that. Joy Division just is not my thing. I have tried and I am sorry.
After this lot, the remaining albums all received one vote each but they are all worthy nominations:
The Specials by The Specials
Drums and Wires by XTC
Setting Sons by The Jam
GI by Germs
Pleasure Principle by Gary Numan
The B-52’s by The B-52’s
Funny Funky Rib Crib by Byard Lancaster
Discovery by ELO
Damn the Torpedos by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
I love that Tom Petty record so glad it got a mention. Germs being there was also cool. This has also made me want to go back and dive properly in to the music of The Specials as I have a surface level knowledge of their stuff.
So there we have it, 1979, what a year. There were also plenty of great albums that people listed as honourable mentions but couldn’t make the list because rules are rules.
The big question is where do we go next? We’ve had 90s, 80s and now 70s. So it’s going to be either a year from the 60s or we breach the millennium. Let me know your thoughts.
Hails!
